The Bennewitz Quartet is one of the top international chamber ensembles, a status confirmed not only by their victories in two prestigious competitions – Osaka in 2005 and Prémio Paolo Borciani, Italy in 2008, but also by the acclaim of the critics. As early as 2006, the German Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung wrote: "... the music was remarkable not just for its clarity of structure, but for the beautiful tonal palette and purity of intonation in its execution. Only very rarely does one experience such skillfully crafted and powerful harmonies... Great art." The ensemble has received various awards on the Czech music scene as well. In 2004 the quartet was awarded The Prize of the Czech Chamber Music Society and in 2019 the four musicians won the Classic Prague Award for the Best Chamber Music Performance of the year.
The quartet currently performs at major venues both in the Czech Republic and abroad (Wigmore Hall London, Musikverein Wien, Konzerthaus Berlin, Théâtre des Champs-Elysées Paris, The Frick Collection New York, Seoul Art Center, Rudolfinum and others), and is regularly invited to festivals such as the Salzburger Festspiele, Luzerne Festival, Rheingau Musik Festival, Kammermusikfest Lockenhaus, and the Prague Spring. The group has had the privilege of working with the outstanding artists: Jean-Yves Thibaudet, Alexander Melnikov, Vadim Gluzman, Isabel Charisius, Pietro de Maria, Reto Bieri, Danjulo Ishizaka and others.
The Bennewitz Quartet especially enjoys playing and performing on the Czech domestic music scene. Particular highlights have included their cooperation with the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra and its conductor Jiří Bělohlávek for a performance of Bohuslav Martinů’s Concerto for String Quartet and Orchestra. The group has made a recording of both quartets by Leoš Janáček for Czech Television in the unique space of Villa Tugendhat in Brno. The Czech Radio regularly records major concerts of the quartet.
The members of the quartet put a lot of stress on the inspiring and sometimes challenging choice of their concert repertoire. In 2012 and 2015, the ensemble performed in a sole evening the complete of Bartók’s six string quartets in Maggio Musicale Fiorentino and in Swedish Upsala. In 2014, the four presented a premiere of The Songs of Immigrants by Slavomír Hořínka in Konzerthaus Berlin. In 2019 the quartet added a new CD in its discography featuring the music of the persecuted Jewish composers H. Krása, V. Ullmann, E. Schulhoff and P. Haas on the Supraphon label.
In the 2023/24 season, the Bennewitz Quartet will return to a number of European venues (Stuttgart, Mannheim, Heidelberg, Linz, Bilbao) and will make their debuts in Klagenfurt, Darmstadt and Duisburg. The quartet will again perform in the United States and Canada, and will continue its various concert projects in the Czech Republic, including a collaboration on an integral performance of Dvořák's string quartets as part of the Dvořák Prague Festival. The ensemble is currently preparing the release of a new CD featuring string quartets by "those who used to play together" - Haydn, Mozart, Vaňhal and Dittersdorf.
Since 1998 the quartet bears the name of the violinist and director of a music conservatory in Prague, Antonín Bennewitz (1833-1926) who contributed greatly to the establishment of the Czech violin school. The most significant musicians who count among his disciples are Otakar Ševčík and František Ondříček and above all Karel Hoffman, Josef Suk and Oskar Nedbal who, under Bennewitz’s influence, formed the famous Bohemian Quartet.

In der weltweiten Kammermusikszene gilt das Bennewitz Quartett als der Kulturbotschafter Tschechiens. Beheimatet in Prag, spielen die Musiker aufgrund ihrer Homogenität, ihrer technischen Perfektion gepaart mit echter Empfindung im Streichquartett-Olymp und verkörpern par excellence das böhmisch-tschechische Klangidiom.
Das Quartett ist regelmäßig zu Gast in der Wigmore Hall London, dem Wiener Musikverein, Konzerthaus Berlin, Théâtre des Champs-Elysées Paris, der Frick Collection New York, dem Seoul Arts Center und der Elbphilharmonie Hamburg. Es konzertiert im Rahmen der Salzburger Festspiele, des Lucerne Festivals, des Lockenhaus Festivals, des Rheingau Musik Festivals, des Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festivals und des Prager Frühlings. Zu seinen Kammermusikpartnern zählen Jean-Yves Thibaudet, Alexander Melnikov, Martin Kasík, Vadim Gluzman und Isabel Charisius. Ein neues Projekt in 24/25 wird die Aufführung zweier später Streichquintette von Brahms und Dvořák sein, gemeinsam mit Veronika Hagen.
Das Bennewitz Quartett begründete seine Karriere als 1. Preisträger zweier der renommiertesten Wettbewerbe für Streichquartette: Osaka 2005 und Prémio Paolo Borciani in Italien 2008. Namensgeber des Ensembles ist der bedeutende tschechische Geiger Antonín Bennewitz, Begründer der tschechischen Violinschule.
2018 war das Ensemble das “Quartet in Residence” der Tschechischen Philharmonie im Rudolphinum Prag. 2019 erhielt es den “Classic Prague Award” für das beste Kammerkonzert des Jahres. Im Januar 2019 umrahmte das Ensemble musikalisch die Gedenkstunde für die Opfer des Holocaust im Deutschen Bundestag.
In der Saison 2023/24 kehrt das Bennewitz Quartett an mehrere europäische Spielstätten zurück (Stuttgart, Mannheim, Heidelberg, Linz, Bilbao) und gibt sein Debüt in Klagenfurt, Darmstadt und Duisburg. Das Quartett wird erneut in den Vereinigten Staaten und Kanada auftreten und seine verschiedenen Konzertprojekte in der Tschechischen Republik fortsetzen, darunter die Zusammenarbeit bei einer Ensembleaufführung der Streichquartette von Dvořák im Rahmen des Dvořák Prague Festival und die Tschechische Kammermusikgesellschaft. Derzeit bereitet das Ensemble die Veröffentlichung einer neuen CD mit Streichquartetten von Haydn, Mozart, Vaňhal und Dittersdorf vor, "die früher zusammen gespielt haben".
Das Bennewitz Quartett hat etliche CDs vorgelegt mit Werken von Bartók, Dvořák, Janáček und Smetana. 2019 erschien bei Supraphon eine Einspielung von Musik jüdischer Komponisten mit Werken von Krása, Ullmann, Schulhoff und Haas. Diese CD wurde von Gramophone UK als Referenzeinspielung und “splendid disc” bewertet.

Bennewitzovo kvarteto je v mezinárodním měřítku špičkovým komorním souborem, což dokládají nejen vítězství ve dvou prestižních soutěžích – v Ósace v roce 2005 a Prémio Paolo Borciani v Itálii v roce 2008, ale i pochvalné hlasy kritiky. Již v roce 2006 německý Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung napsal: “...obdivuhodná byla vedle zřetelné strukturace hudby zvukově krásná tónomalba a intonační čistota provedení. Jen velmi zřídka člověk zažije takto umně a efektně znějící harmonie...Veliké umění.“ Také na domácí scéně získal soubor mnohá ocenění. V roce 2004 bylo Bennewitzovo kvarteto vyhlášeno laureátem Českého spolku pro komorní hudbu při České filharmonii a v roce 2019 soubor převzal cenu Classic Prague Awards za nejlepší komorní výkon roku.
Kvarteto pravidelně koncertuje na významných českých i zahraničních podiích (Wigmore Hall Londýn, Musikverein Vídeň, Konzerthaus Berlín, Théâtre des Champs-Elysées Paříž, The Frick Collection New York, Seoul Art Center, Rudolfinum a dalších) a vystupuje také na festivalech Salzburger Festspiele, Luzerne Festival, Rheingau Musik Festival, Kammermusikfest Lockenhaus, Dvořákova Praha a Pražské jaro. Soubor navázal uměleckou spolupráci s vynikajícími umělci jako Alexander Melnikov, Vadim Gluzman, JeanYves Thibaudet, Krzysztof Chorzelski, Danjulo Ishizaka, Pietro de Maria a dalšími.
Zvláštní potěšení přináší Bennewitzovu kvartetu působení na domácí hudební scéně. Velmi si cení spolupráce s Českou filharmonií a jejím bývalým šéfdirigentem Jiřím Bělohlávkem při provedení Koncertu pro smyčcové kvarteto a orchestr Bohuslava Martinů, jakož i setkání se Symfonickým orchestrem hl. m. Prahy FOK a dirigentem Michaelem Sanderlingem, s nímž kvarteto provedlo skladbu Absolute Jest Johna Adamse. Pro Českou televizi natočilo kvarteto v ojedinělém prostoru Vily Tugendhat oba smyčcové kvartety Leoše Janáčka a Český rozhlas pravidelně zaznamenává významné koncerty souboru.
Bennewitzovo kvarteto se zaměřuje na ojedinělý výběr repertoáru. V roce 2012 a 2015 provedlo v jediném večeru kompletní šestici Bartókových kvartetů na festivalu Maggio Musicale Fiorentino a ve švédské Uppsale. V lednu roku 2014 v berlínském Konzerthausu uvedlo ve světové premiéře skladbu Slavomíra Hořínky Songs of Immigrants. U společnosti Supraphon vydalo v roce 2019 nahrávku se skladbami židovských perzekvovaných autorů (V. Ullmann, H. Krása, E. Schulhoff a P. Haas).
V sezoně 2023/24 se Bennewitzovo kvarteto vrátí na řadu evropských pódií (Stuttgart, Mannheim, Heidelberg, Linec, Bilbao) a bude debutovat v Klagenfurtu, Darmstadtu a Duisburgu. Kvarteto bude opět koncertovat ve Spojených státech a Kanadě a bude pokračovat v různých koncertních projektech v České republice včetně spolupráce na souborném provedení Dvořákových smyčcových kvartetů v rámci festivalu Dvořákova Praha, koncertu v komorní řadě FOK a v Českém spolku pro komorní hudbu. Soubor v současné době připravuje vydání nového CD, na kterém zazní smyčcové kvartety "těch, kteří spolu hrávali" - Haydna, Mozarta, Vaňhala a Dittersdorfa.
Soubor nese již od roku 1998 jméno houslisty a ředitele Pražské konzervatoře Antonína Bennewitze (1833-1926), který se zasloužil o vytvoření české houslové školy. Mezi jeho žáky patřil Otakar Ševčík, František Ondříček, ale také Karel Hoffmann, Josef Suk a Oskar Nedbal, jimž dal podnět k založení slavného Českého kvarteta.
